I recently caught up with Richard Taylor over at The Life of a Gentleman podcast to do a quick recap of Pitti Uomo 92 in Florence, Italy. We also discussed personal style, fashion, and some keys on how to look your best!
Here are some of the highlights from our conversation.
1. Style and fashion are not the same thing. Fashion is fast-paced, ever-evolving, and it definitely comes and goes. However, personal style is what you do with fashion as well as how you carry yourself within the world.
2. As I’ve often said, having the proper fit is the most important thing about an outfit. Therefore, one way to obtain the proper fit (without spending a bunch of money on tailoring) is to stick with the brands that fit you best. Once you find a brand that fits your body well, just gravitate to that one instead of experimenting with several others. For instance, a pair of slim fit jeans from Calvin Klein does not fit the same as a pair of slim fit jeans from H&M.
3. The best way to look fly on a budget is to shop in thrift stores. However, location is key when it comes to finding quality clothing in the thrift. Therefore, if your local thrift store does not have anything good, don’t be afraid to travel to other affluent neighborhoods because they usually have some of the best finds.
4. When it comes to looking your best, wearing colors that compliment your skin tone is essential. Color theory is truly an art and it can take some trial and error. However, for those of you that are dark skinned like myself consider wearing earth tones, brighter blues, reds, and pinks. For those of you that have light skin tones, try wearing dark browns, cool blues, and dark saturated greens.
As always, thanks for reading and be sure to check out The Life of a Gentleman Podcast for more thought provoking conversations!
