I’ve wanted to discuss this topic for quite some time and when I met Michael Taylor, Custom Clothier and Founder of Eminent Style, I knew he was the right guy for the job.

It’s not easy being a big dude with style. Clothes off-the-rack never fit perfectly, shopping can be a challenge, and compromises always have to be made. However, Michael shows that it can be done with both style and grace!

Here is his story on why he started his custom suit company, Eminent Style, as well as some style tips for larger guys!

Eminent Style: Bring Your Style Visions To Life

“I’m a family man. I have an amazing wife, a beautiful daughter, and a son on the way. I attended Midwestern State University and received my Bachelors degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Shortly after graduation, I started my career in fashion and worked at well-known menswear retailers like Jos. A. Banks and Brooks Brothers.”

“Currently, I work in sales and marketing and I plan on running my company full-time one day.”

Style tip #1: Spread collar shirts should always be paired with larger tie knots like a windsor or half windsor knot. This pairing is ideal for gentlemen with larger necks.

“I would describe my personal style as corporate flair with a hint of vintage. I’ve always appreciated the simplicity of corporate suiting, but with the right fit of course. I also like to add vintage accessories such as ties, pocket squares, and suspenders to complete my outfits.”

“In terms of style inspiration, I’m a huge fan of the Great Gatsby era and Harlem Nights. Harlem nights is one of my favorite movies not only for the comedy, but for the impeccable and timeless style they displayed.”

Style Tip #2: Leave some room in the trousers so you’re not accentuating your upper body, but remember that you don’t need a sloppy break at the bottom of your trousers either!

Some of the best solutions and innovations in our society has come out of necessity. As a bigger guy it’s even more important to find the proper fit, so since Michael couldn’t find clothes that complimented his body type, he decided to make them himself!

“I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and an eye for fashion. So my thinking was, why not marry the two? Also, since I’m a bigger guy finding stuff to wear off the rack was tough. So with all of that, I decided to start my own custom suit company, and thus you have Eminent Style!”

Style Tip #3: Try to keep your jacket buttoned as much as possible when standing because it shapes the silhouette.

Whatever Your Style, Make it Eminent

As a fellow entrepreneur, I’m always interested in learning about what motivates others because the journey definitely isn’t easy. Similar to Richard Taylor, Founder of Harrison Blake Apparel, leaving behind a lasting legacy is a huge motivational factor for Michael as well.

“My faith in God, my family, and my desire of being successful keeps me motivated. I want to leave a legacy for my great grand children and beyond, so that starts with me. Some might say that’s a lot to carry, but that’s what I’ve set out to do and that’s what keeps me going!”

Style Tip #4: Go with a wider notch or peak lapel to proportionally cover broad shoulders.

Here are some additional style tips for larger guys!

  • Consider buying full-cut clothing that fits properly in the primary areas (collar size and sleeve length for shirts, shoulders and body length for jackets). Then, have the rest of the garment shaped by your tailor to fit your body.
  • Go with side vents instead of a center vent on your jackets. This keeps a clean drape across the back whenever your hands are in your pockets.
  • Darker colors are always slimming.
  • Larger guys typically run hot, so don’t forget that undershirts can help absorb moisture.
