I often say, you only have one chance to make a first impression, and that’s why personal image is so important to me. Hence, the reason I don’t mind being the best dressed man in the room.
In fact, most people make a judgement about you within the first 10 seconds of meeting you.
Therefore, it’s extremely important to make a great first impression especially if you’re aspiring to conduct business or you’re simply meeting someone for the first time. So here are 4 simple ways to make a great first impression.
1. Firm Handshake. There has been so many times when I met someone for the first time and the initial handshake was so awkward that I was immediately turned off. You want to make sure that your handshake is firm and not flimsy, yet strong but not too aggressive so you’re not hurting the other person’s hand.
Most importantly, make sure your hands aren’t sticky or wet. If you’re someone that suffers from sweaty palms, make sure they’re dry and clean before reaching out your hand. You don’t want to be remembered for having clammy hands and making the other person wish they had hand sanitizer.
2. Make Eye Contact. There is a thin line between making good eye contact and just being creepy. Making good eye contact displays interest and conveys trust. So it’s very important that you make eye contact when speaking to someone, especially if you’re meeting them for the first time. However, you want to make sure that you’re not staring, because that’s just rude. A good way to avoid staring is just being natural and occasionally smiling and nodding in agreement as the conversation unfolds. This will come off as being more natural as opposed to being creepy and awkward.
3. Make Sure You Smell Great. I previously discussed how important it is to smell good at all times, and which colognes were preferred by some of my closest friends. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than meeting someone for the first time and smelling like you’ve just left the gym. So once you’ve figured out how to choose the right cologne, make sure you only apply a subtle amount. Always remember that less is more!
4. Dress Well. Last but certainly not least, the easiest way to make a great first impression is to be well dressed. If I had a dollar for every time someone forgot my name but remembered me for being dapper, I would be rich by now. However, if you’re at event (ex. networking event) and you’ll be around a lot of people, you can always stand out amongst the crowd by wearing something bold to make a statement without saying a word!
As always, thanks for reading!
