Wearing suits more casually have become one of my favorite things to do ever since I moved to California. It’s the perfect outfit for when you’re going on a date with your lady, going out for drinks, or just out on vacation. As a result, I always get asked about how to dress down a suit correctly.
Therefore, here are a few keys on how to dress down your suit with a t-shirt and a pair of sneakers!
How To Dress Down Your Suit
Tuck in your shirt. One of the first and most important things to do when wearing a t-shirt with a suit is to tuck it in. Even though the goal is to look casual and cool, wearing your t-shirt untucked can make you look sloppy and unkempt!
Fit is key. Similar to everything else in menswear, having the right fit is the most important factor. When it comes to wearing a t-shirt with a suit, you want to make sure that the t-shirt is slim fitting but not too tight. There’s no need to show everyone that you’ve been doing your push-ups!
Choose a crew neck over a v-neck. I used to love black and white v-neck tees back in the day when Jim Jones and Juelz Santana made it look cool. However, my preference has changed and I always prefer a crew neck t-shirt with a blazer. Just make sure that the collar is firm and doesn’t look like one of those bacon neck t-shirts.
Avoid bright colors and bold patterns. Like I always say, keeping it simple is always the best way to go. A thin nautical stripe t-shirt or a solid color shirt like the one I’m wearing is ideal. And, of course, don’t ever play yourself and wear a graphic t-shirt underneath a blazer.
Keep your shoes minimal. The best sneakers to wear while dressing down your suit is a pair of minimal and understated classics. Look for something that is comfortable and only has about 1-2 colors like these trainers by Diadora!
