I was recently asked to share my thoughts on the Kanye West x Adidas collaboration, and as a die hard fan of Kanye West, my opinion can sometimes be biased. However, I think this new partnership makes a lot of sense for several reasons. In fact, I can honestly say that I have never been more excited for someone that I don’t even know. After listening to all of the interviews that Kanye gave in 2013, while promoting the Yeezus tour, I learned that he had devoted a lot of his time and money into pursuing his dreams of becoming a fashion designer. So much time and effort, that his music career eventually took a back seat. Hence the reason, Yeezus is his most controversial album to date. Therefore, it is hard for me not to root for Kanye and want to see him succeed. However, in terms of the actual Adidas Originals x Kanye West collaboration I think it is a testament to overcoming adversity and truly pursuing your dreams.
Kanye West is arguably one of the biggest brands in the world right now, in terms of music and fashion. Therefore, I think this new partnership will be mutually beneficial for both Adidas and Kanye. For starters, now that Kanye has Adidas supporting him he will be able to show the world what he has been trying to articulate to us over the past few years. Also, now that he is finally able to design at this level, he will be able to put more energy into his music and create the songs that most of his fans were longing for. (In other words, music with less angst and frustration.) As for Adidas, not only are they adding Kanye to their already star studded list of designers, but they will also help Kanye take his overall design aesthetic to another level, which will later result in them
making millions in revenue over the course of this deal. I also think this partnership makes a lot of sense because Adidas has experience working with couture designers such as Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto, and Raf Simons. Therefore, they have a good understanding of how to with designers without stifling their creativity.
In terms of the apparel and the Yeezy 750 Boost, I think they reflect the fact that Kanye has a strong understanding of the current market. The over sized bomber jackets, sweatshirts, and raw hems are currently on trend and they clearly show where he gained a lot of his influences from. As for the Yeezy 750 Boost, I think they are reminiscent of the Air Yeezy I and II, which was great for providing continuity. I also appreciate the fact that these shoes are more functional for playing sports as opposed to the previous
releases, mostly due to the Adidas boost technology. In my opinion, I think it is undeniable that Kanye has a knack for designing footwear and his previous work with Louis Vuitton, Nike, Guiseppe Zanotti, and now Adidas is a testament to his skills.
Overall I think the greater take away from the Kanye West x Adidas collaboration, is the fact that Kanye continues to prove that anything is possible. Kanye was originally a producer with aspirations of becoming a rapper, but at that time very few people believed in him. However, after winning 21 Grammy’s and selling over 20 million albums, he has managed to prove those non-believers wrong. Now he is on the verge of doing it again by entering the fashion world and creating merchandise that consumers love.
Keep in mind, this journey was not an easy one and he did not receive any special privileges because of his celebrity status. During one of his interviews Kanye explained that he interned with Fendi, he took meetings with every major fashion house and continuously got denied, spent over 13 million dollars of his own money, and was denied admittance to Central Saint Martins (one of the leading institutions for art and design education) because of his celebrity status. Now although it might still be too soon to call it, but after witnessing some of his previous successes I think Kanye West has a bright future in the fashion industry.
As always thank you for reading!
