I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Chris Bissonette, the Founder and Creative Director of the Buffalo Dandy. The Buffalo Dandy is the first men’s fashion and lifestyle blog based out of Buffalo, NY. My original intent was to conduct an interview with the Buffalo Dandy. However, our meeting turned into a genuine conversation about everything from menswear, trends, our careers, and of course our affinity for thrift store shopping. Therefore, our conversation organically drifted off topic several times, so I decided that it would be best if I just provided a brief synopsis of our conversation.
The Buffalo Dandy blog was started in 2011 and initially was a way for Chris to express his personal style, learn more about WordPress, and provide a source for men’s fashion and fashion related news in Buffalo, NY. Since, there was no existing men’s fashion scene online in Buffalo, Chris decided to take it upon himself and fill that void. Unfortunately, Buffalo, NY has always carried a bad reputation for being unfashionable and flooded with men that wear suits 3 sizes too big. Therefore, I admire the fact that Chris decided to create a platform where he could provide exposure to the more flattering aspects of men’s fashion in Buffalo.
Through his blog Chris has been able to provide clothing reviews for several brands such as Creative Recreation, Nantucket Brand, and Lumina Clothing just to name a few. He has also been invited to exclusive fashion related events such as the launch party for Bloodline Handmade and private events at Blue Collar. The Buffalo Dandy was also featured in other Buffalo, NY fashion publications such as BuffaloSpree.com and Buffalo.com. We also discussed how being a fashion blogger provides a great opportunity to express yourself and establish one’s self as somewhat of a local celebrity.
We then discussed some of our favorite thrift stores in the area, but of course seasoned thrifters do not to reveal their sources. However he visits local thrift stores at least once a week in search of vintage quality ties and usually finds some gems by Drakes and Gant. Occasionally he also comes across some Harris Tweed Blazers (which is clearly one his favorite fabrics, just check out the background of his website.)
Ironically enough, we go to the same tailor, Chaybans Custom Tailors, which makes perfect sense because we both appreciate a tailored fit. However, I learned that the man taught himself how to sew and has even made two suits. Therefore, he can actually alter his own clothes, but with a family and young son, finding the time to taper pants does not come often enough.
The topic of trends later came about and Chris used a quote that stuck with me for the rest of the day. “Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.” The quote was actually from the late great Oscar Wilde but I completely agree with the 100-year old quote, it just goes to show that fashion is cyclical and men should really just stick to some of the basic wardrobe essentials such as navy blazers, dark jeans, and OCBD (oxford cloth button downs).
I must admit that this meeting was way overdue, especially since we planned on meeting shortly after we were featured on the Buffalo.com Style Spotlight, but I am glad we finally got the chance to meet. It is not every day that I get the opportunity to discuss menswear with someone that share similar views, so it was a great experience for me. Stay tuned for another Buffalo Dandy and Dapper Advisor collaboration, but in the meanwhile make sure you check out his latest venture, The Buffalo Dandy Bow Tie Shop.
