A Menswear Story

Vintage Plaid Suit and Chocolate Chelsea Boots by Jack Erwin
I always talk about the importance of dressing well and how important it is to present yourself to the public in the best way possible. I have so many stories about how the way I was dressed provided me with unexpected opportunities. So I wanted to share one of my most recent stories that reminded me that you only have one chance to make a first impression.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to visit Nordstrom Rack again to see if they updated their shoe selection (unfortunately they didn’t). After briefly browsing through the aisles, I realized that I would be leaving empty-handed. So just when I was about to make my way out, I was approached by a charismatic gentleman accompanied by his adorable daughter. He got my attention by complimenting my outfit (I was wearing the same outfit in the photo above) and I proceeded by expressing my usual form of gratitude. Immediately afterwards his compliment was followed by questions about my educational background, my favorite book, and my career goals. He made it clear that he was impressed with my achievements thus far and started telling me about his business. He spoke about being an entrepreneur and works in marketing for sports apparel companies like Nike and Under Armour. Of course, he grabbed my attention after naming those brands. He then proceeded to tell me that he was in the process of expanding his business and was looking for people with ambition and leadership qualities. So we exchanged contact information and scheduled a meeting for later on in the week. On the way home I couldn’t help but feel flattered that someone practically offered me a job after simply engaging in some casual conversation. On the other hand, it made me wonder if that same opportunity would have been offered to me if I was on my way home from the gym and was wearing a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie. I highly doubt it, but this situation definitely reminded me that you only get one chance at a first impression and fortunately for me, I made a great first impression before I even said a word.

To be continued…
